Serialized master w/o equipment master

Hi

Our business required to captured Serialized parts information for purchased parts. As per Standard, Serial number generates equipment record. Is there any provision to stop generate equipment record. For capturing warranty we would like to capture on need basis. Any suggestion are appreciated.
