Do you mean no any selected record is returned?
Not sure how you implement you pop up window.
Maybe you can compare it with some standard views, for example, create an corporate account in business role 'salespro', check the logics for field 'employee' under 'Employee Responsible' section.
This field is :EMPLOYEERESPONSIBLE->PARTNER_AUTO_COMPLETE in view BP_HEAD/AccountDetails . When click 'F4 help' icon attached to this field, another view BP_EMPL_SEARCH/SearchHelp is opened. Then select an entry, the selected value will be returned.

CL_BP_HEAD_ACCOUNTDETAILS_IMPL->EH_ONSEL_EMPLOYEE as well as related logics.
